About Volunteer 2030

On the 70th anniversary of the United Nations (September 25-27, 2015), the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted at the UN Headquarters by member states. The SDGs, which succeeds the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), is a new, universal set of goals, targets and indicators for the next 15 years. It is part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which is a plan of action for people, planet and prosperity, seeking to strengthen universal peace in larger freedom. All member countries and stakeholders are part of a collaborative partnership to implement the plan.

The objective of this campaign is to highlight the value and importance of volunteers and their work toward successfully accomplishing the SDGs. Some of our key messages include:

  • Volunteers make a positive contribution to sustainable development – they are needed to implement any framework
  • Volunteers are key to increasing civic participation that holds leaders to account for their promises – empowering people
  • Volunteers come in all different forms– international, national, community, youth, older people, diaspora, South-South etc. and all have a unique value and contribution.
  • Volunteers will play a vital role in the accomplishment of each of the Sustainable Development Goals

The website will highlight examples of how volunteering has contributed to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. The front page of the site will feature a different story each week, which will link to one or more of the 17 goals. The space will accommodate pictures, text, video and other multimedia sources. Volunteers are encouraged to share stories in engaging ways that focus on quality and diversity.

The campaign aims to not only share personal experiences of our global volunteers, but also aims to serve as a valuable resource center to the global volunteer community on the SDGs. We want to build a dynamic online resource center for volunteer-involving organizations, with a collection of best practices and a tool to draw on when we present the impact of volunteering to the High Level Political Forum!
